Solas Energy® Consulting’s Work Receives Prestigious Clean50 Top Project Award

Solas Energy Consulting Inc., a provider of comprehensive energy solutions, today announced that its work supporting the City of Calgary’s Solar Residential Calculator received a 2023 Clean50 Top Project award. Canada’s Clean50 Top Project awards are amongst the awards announced annually by Delta Management Group and Canada’s Clean50 organization, recognizing the best sustainability-oriented projects completed in Canada over the prior two years. Clean50 Top Projects are chosen based on impact, innovation, capacity to inform and inspire, and ability to be readily imitated.

Solas Energy’s award-winning project – Mapping Solar Potential for Calgary Residents – launched in February 2020, when the company contracted with the City of Calgary to design a Residential Solar Calculator to support the City’s residential solar (photovoltaic) development program. The calculator provides Calgary residents with a view of cost savings associated with residential rooftop solar installation over conventional energy usage. The calculator also provides estimated cost for installation, production potential based on residential address, and environmental benefits, including potential for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Solas Energy’s work included developing a model to benchmark, monitor, and verify environmental performance of solar installations for residential addresses throughout Calgary. Throughout the course of the two-year project, Solas Energy refined the model to provide the most accurate outputs possible for Calgarians.

“This innovative project could not have been completed without the collaboration and passion of so many people at the City of Calgary. As a Calgary-based team, we are grateful to the City of Calgary for its vision, environmental stewardship, and the leadership role it plays in inspiring other communities to invest in a net-zero carbon future. The Residential Solar Calculator provides Calgary residents with the economic and environmental data Calgarians need to make informed decisions about adopting solar energy for their homes,” noted Paula McGarrigle, President and CEO of Solas Energy Consulting Inc. – Canada.

Carolyn Bowen, Director of Climate and Environment at the City of Calgary added, “The Residential Solar Calculator is a valuable component of the City of Calgary’s environmental strategy and journey towards a net-zero carbon future. We appreciate the collaboration and expertise Solas Energy provided to support the development of this innovative tool for Calgary residents.”

The Residential Solar Calculator launched on the City of Calgary’s website in February of 2022. Since then, the site has received tens of thousands of visitors who are eager to learn about the benefits of solar installation on the rooftops of their Calgary homes.
